In my 30+ years in education, as both a teacher and an administrator, I’ve seen it many times: when older students struggle, many of those gaps trace back to one thing. They never mastered phonics when they were young.
Phonics is where reading starts. This morning our kids, here at our Christian Hybrid, gathered at the whiteboard while their teacher modeled each sound slowly and clearly. They repeated it, blended it, and wrote the words themselves. This it where it begins!
Small groups make it work. The teacher hears every child and catches mistakes before they become habits.
Miss this window, and some kids spend years catching up. Get it right, and their confidence continues to grow as a reader.
This just gives you a glimpse into what we do here. One sound at a time.
